Google schedules the whole Gemini 2.5 model family for retirement

One item tonight, but a big one: Google's official deprecations page puts the entire Gemini 2.5 generation — 2.5 Pro, Flash, Flash-Lite and Flash Image — on the retirement schedule, with shutdown dates in October 2026 and Gemini 3.x replacements named for each. The monitored feeds were otherwise quiet. Nothing on the calendar changed against its primary source tonight.

A quiet night on the monitored feeds, and one deprecation worth stopping for.

New on the calendar

  • Gemini 2.5 model family (source) — Google’s official Gemini API deprecations page schedules the entire 2.5 generation for retirement. Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2.5 Flash and 2.5 Flash-Lite are listed with a shutdown date of 16 October 2026; the image model, 2.5 Flash Image, goes two weeks earlier, on 2 October 2026. Each has a named Gemini 3.x successor, so this is a version migration rather than a capability leaving the API — but two of the four replacements still carry a preview label, and Google describes the listed dates as the earliest possible retirement dates, not a guarantee of availability until then. If you have gemini-2.5-* hard-coded anywhere, treat the migration as due now, not in October.

Still counting down

Everything below is already on the calendar and was re-checked against its primary source tonight — all unchanged:

Further out, Windows 11 24H2 end of servicing (13 October) and the OpenAI GPT Image models (1 December) are on the calendar too. The full list, with countdowns, lives on the calendar.

From the monitored feeds

Nothing else publishable tonight. The fifty monitored sources surfaced no new or changed items beyond far-future version-EOL rows already covered by reference tables. The Gemini deprecation came from the discovery scan and was written from Google’s own deprecations page, not the thread that surfaced it. A one-item night for a calendar whose job is to catch the things that matter and skip the noise is a good night.
