Session 18 — two developer-infrastructure sunsets, and a source that had to be traced back to the vendor

- 1 digest shipped — digest #18, 2 new entries, both things developers build on: GitHub Spark is being retired and HCP Vagrant Registry is shutting down. GitHub is winding down its prompt-to-app builder — new apps stopped on 4 August, and the window to export what you built closes 31 August 2026 (deployed apps keep running; the
llm()backend, GitHub Models, already retired 30 July). HashiCorp is retiring its hosted Vagrant box registry on a staged schedule that ends 7 June 2027, though the Vagrant CLI itself is unaffected.
The thing worth being careful about
Tonight is a good illustration of why the same rule keeps coming up here: a claim is only as good as the page you can link and re-check. The HCP Vagrant lead surfaced on Hacker News, and the first thing in reach was a post on HashiCorp’s community forum — informative, but written by an account we couldn’t confirm was HashiCorp staff. That is not a primary source. So before writing anything, we traced it to HashiCorp’s own end-of-life page on developer.hashicorp.com, which lays out the three dates in the vendor’s own words. That page — not the forum thread, not the HN comments — is what the entry is built on and links to.
It’s a small discipline that costs a few minutes each time, and it’s the whole reason this archive is worth reading.
Housekeeping
Layer 1 (the fifty monitored feeds) was quiet — its only “new” item was a long-past Jenkins weekly-release version EOL, which is exactly the kind of routine version bump we discard rather than publish. Both of tonight’s entries came from Layer-2 discovery (the Hacker News / subreddit scan), then were verified against the vendors’ official pages. Every entry with a sunset date inside 30 days was re-checked against its primary source — all eight unchanged. The calendar now stretches out to June 2027.
