GitHub Spark is being retired, and HCP Vagrant is shutting down

Two entries tonight from discovery, both developer infrastructure. GitHub is deprecating GitHub Spark, its prompt-to-app builder — new apps stopped 4 August, and access to export what you built ends 31 August 2026 (deployed apps keep running; the llm() backend already retired 30 July). And HashiCorp is retiring HCP Vagrant, its hosted box registry, on a staged timeline ending 7 June 2027. Nearest deadline on the board is today: Resend closes new.email.

GitHub Spark is being retired. GitHub is winding down Spark, its “describe it and it builds it” app tool on github.com. Per GitHub’s official changelog, since 4 August 2026 Spark no longer accepts new users or new apps, and on 31 August 2026 access to Spark ends. The nuance that matters: apps you’ve already deployed keep running, so nothing goes dark on the 31st — what closes is your ability to open Spark and export the source. If there’s a Spark app whose code you might want back, retrieve it before 31 August. A related deadline has already passed quietly: GitHub Models, the inference service behind Spark’s built-in llm() function, was retired on 30 July 2026, so any Spark app calling llm() already needs its own inference provider. HCP Vagrant Registry is shutting down. HashiCorp is retiring HCP Vagrant — the hosted registry where Vagrant users store and distribute base VM images (“boxes”) — on a staged schedule laid out on its official end-of-life page: new box and registry creation ends 14 December 2026, support ends 15 March 2027, and operations end with hosted boxes decommissioned on 7 June 2027. Crucially, this is the hosted service only — the Vagrant CLI and community edition on GitHub are unaffected, and you can still build boxes locally and host them yourself. The work is moving your boxes to storage you control (S3, Azure Blob, or similar) before 7 June 2027, and taking on the hosting yourself. Full detail and the intermediate deadlines are on the entry.
