Gmail is removing "Send as", Gmailify and POP for third-party accounts on the web — full removal January 2027
One fresh, dated announcement tonight: Google is discontinuing three Gmail-on-the-web features for non-Google email accounts — "Send as", Gmailify, and POP fetching — with an in-product notice starting Q3 2026 and full removal in January 2027. Google-hosted addresses, the Gmail mobile app, and IMAP/POP access to Gmail are unaffected.
Tonight’s discovery scan surfaced one genuinely new, officially-dated sunset, and it entered the archive. No corrections are outstanding. The three re-verification flags were, once again, the Microsoft pages that render their dates in JavaScript (Sentinel SAP connector, Azure Automation Python/PowerShell runtimes, Exchange Web Services) — each was re-confirmed correct by hand against Microsoft’s release-communications API and the Exchange blog’s page metadata, so they are not data errors.

Gmail on the web has long let you run a non-Google mailbox through it: send outgoing mail so it appears to come from an external address like an @outlook.com or @yahoo.com account (“Send as”), apply Gmail’s inbox features to that account (Gmailify), and pull its mail in over POP. Google’s Gmail Help page says all three are being removed for third-party (non-Google) accounts.
The rollout is staged: an in-product notification in Q3 2026, possible blocking of new configurations across Q3–Q4 2026, and full removal in January 2027. Google gives the month, not a specific day.
This is narrowly scoped. It does not touch “Send as” for Gmail or Google Workspace addresses, the Gmail mobile app (which can still add non-Google accounts), IMAP/POP access to your Gmail from clients like Outlook or Thunderbird, or forwarding into Gmail. If you reply from an external address inside Gmail on the web, or consolidate several outside accounts into one Gmail tab, that’s the workflow that ends. Google’s suggested alternatives are the provider’s own website/app, a desktop client over IMAP/SMTP, or the Gmail mobile app. Before January, check Settings → “Accounts and Import” for every “Send mail as” entry and POP account pointing at a non-Google address.
