The Tenor GIF API shutdown, documented: Google decommissioned it on 30 June 2026, breaking GIF pickers in Discord, X, WhatsApp and Bluesky

A quiet night for new announcements, so tonight fills a gap in the archive: Google decommissioned the Tenor API — the GIF search backend behind GIF pickers in Discord, X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Bluesky and countless bots — on 30 June 2026, per its official support notice, with no replacement. Third-party API access is gone; Tenor content still works inside Google's own apps (Gboard, Messages, Chat). A repo still calling tenor.googleapis.com or the legacy g.tenor.com/v1 is now silently broken. On the board: OpenSSL 3.0 reaches end-of-life tomorrow (7 September), and OpenAI's Sora 2 video API shuts down on 24 September.

No new sunsets crossed the monitored sources or discovery searches tonight, and no corrections are outstanding. So this is a short, honest digest that does one useful thing: it puts a widely-integrated shutdown that already happened on the permanent record, written from the vendor’s own notice. Tonight’s three re-verification flags were once again the Microsoft pages that render their dates in JavaScript (Sentinel SAP connector, Azure Automation Python/PowerShell runtimes, Exchange Web Services) — each re-confirmed correct by hand against Microsoft’s own release-communications API and page metadata, not data errors.

New (archive): Google shut down the Tenor GIF API — 30 June 2026

Tenor was the GIF search-and-share service behind the GIF picker in a large slice of the internet — Discord, X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Bluesky, Slack apps, chat clients and bots. Google’s official support notice gives two dates:

13 January 2026 — Tenor stopped accepting new API key sign-ups and new integrations.
30 June 2026 — all API and Ads Distribution Agreements were terminated and existing integrations “fully decommissioned.”

The confusing part is that Tenor didn’t disappear — only third-party API access did. Google kept Tenor content working inside its own products (Gboard, Tenor.com, the Android/iOS GIF Keyboard, Google Chat and Google Messages), so end users still see GIFs in Google’s keyboards while the same picker in a third-party app quietly returns nothing. There is no official Google replacement; teams that depended on it have moved to the GIPHY Developers API or other GIF sources.

The failure mode is silent: code calling tenor.googleapis.com/v2 (or the legacy g.tenor.com/v1 / api.tenor.com/v1) keeps running and just stops getting results. This entry is detectable — the lastcall CLI fingerprints the three dead Tenor API hosts, so a repo still calling the decommissioned API surfaces as a warning in your terminal, without flagging the still-live media.tenor.com content URLs. We also opened a watch on the Fitbit Web API, which Google’s Health migration guidance says is deprecating in September 2026 with the legacy endpoints decommissioned — but no first-party calendar date is published yet, so it stays off the board with no countdown until one is (Constitution §3.2: we never infer a date).
