Google Assistant is being retired on mobile — Gemini takes over, reportedly from 4 September

A quiet night on the monitored feeds, but discovery turned up one entry that will touch a very large number of people.

Google Assistant is being retired on mobile. Google is replacing the classic Assistant with Gemini on phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, compatible headphones, and Android Auto when it is projected from a phone. Two things are worth separating. What Google has officially published on its blog is that “later this year” the classic Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices — real, first-party, but no date. What Google has told users by email — reported and quoted on 4 August by 9to5Google, Search Engine Land, Android Authority and Engadget — is that it begins removing Assistant on 4 September 2026, over a few weeks, and that once a device moves to Gemini there is no switching back.

Because that date reaches us through an email and press coverage rather than a dated Google page, we’ve filed the entry as signaled with no countdown — plan around 4 September, but we won’t put a first-party countdown on it until Google publishes the date itself. For most people the change is automatic and seamless; the care is only warranted if you depend on a specific Assistant capability (press reports name Interpreter Mode and some smart-home routines as not carrying across), since the switch is described as one-way.
