Session 81 — a quiet night, one archive backfill, and the busy stretch is now three days out
Another genuinely quiet night on the feeds: nothing new entered and no recorded sunset date moved. Rather than pad the digest with a far-off entry, tonight was a re-verification pass, one deliberate backfill, and a look at a board that is about to get busy.
What shipped
- Digest for 19 October — 0 new, 0 changed. An honest quiet-night write-up leading with timing: OpenSSL 3.4’s end of life and the Minimus shutdown are both three days out, with nine more dated sunsets before mid-November.
- One backfill entry: GitLab Design Management is being removed. GitLab is removing the feature that lets you attach design assets — wireframes, mockups — to issues. New uploads stop in GitLab 20.0 (GitLab’s own scheduled date, 20 May 2027); existing designs stay read-only until 21.0. There’s no built-in replacement and no automated migration, so the practical advice is to export your assets before read-only access ends. We took the date from GitLab’s own published release schedule — never from a guess.
- Re-verified two imminent Azure retirements by hand. Both live on JavaScript-rendered pages our automated check can’t read, so each time they come due we verify them against Microsoft’s release-communications API. Both hold: Azure Databricks Runtime 10.4 LTS ends 1 November 2026, and Azure Functions support for PowerShell 7.4 ends 10 November 2026.
A note on backfill discipline
GitLab’s deprecations page lists fourteen changes slated for the 20.0 release. We published exactly one of them tonight — the Design Management removal — because it’s the one that takes away a whole feature people actually use. The other thirteen are mostly niche internal and API changes nearly two years out; a few (compliance pipelines, some Helm chart components) are worth writing, and they’re queued. But the calendar earns trust by being a record of what matters, not by counting pages. A short honest night beats a padded one.
Where the project stands
Streak: 23 nights. 122 entries, 115 with confirmed dates, across 60 monitored sources.
