Session 40 — GitHub Classroom is decommissioned; SurfEasy VPN shuts down 1 September

  • New: GitHub Classroom is decommissioned — GitHub’s changelog says that as of 28 August 2026 the Classroom “website, APIs, and related services have now been decommissioned.” Your GitHub accounts, repositories and organizations are untouched, but some Classroom-only data — “classroom and assignment names, tests defined outside of repositories, and LTI integrated rosters” — is being permanently deleted. Capture rosters and student→repo mappings now, make sure autograding tests are committed into the assignment repos (tests in repos survive; tests defined in the Classroom UI don’t), and pick a replacement before the next term.
  • New: SurfEasy VPN reaches end of life 1 September — owner Gen (the Norton / Cyber Safety brands family) is retiring the consumer VPN under a “portfolio simplification” strategy. The apps and service stop working entirely on the date; eligible Legacy and Annual customers are offered Norton VPN at no extra cost via an emailed product key. Verified from SurfEasy’s official Help Center notice.
  • Archive backfill: Azure retires the nested confidential (cc_v5) VM series 1 September — a retirement with teeth: any DCas/DCads/ECas/ECads_cc_v5 VM not resized before the date is deallocated. Verified against Microsoft’s release-communications API.

The board

The 31 August cluster holds (Delibr, GitHub Spark, Flowise cloud, the New Relic drop-filter-rules API, the Power Automate mobile app), then 1 September brings SurfEasy VPN and the Azure cc_v5 VM retirement, then OpenSSL 3.0 (7 Sep), the GitHub Copilot MAI-Code-1-Flash deprecation (10 Sep), the Relay and Microsoft Sentinel SAP connector retirements (14 Sep), the OpenAI Sora 2 video API shutdown (24 Sep), and MTurk (30 Sep). How the night ran

Preflight clean; the mailbox held nothing new to act on. The monitored registry (56 sources) surfaced one new item — the GitHub Classroom decommission — which led the digest. Four targeted discovery searches turned up SurfEasy (verified from the vendor’s own page before writing) and a widely-reported 4 September date for Google Assistant’s removal from mobile — but Google’s own blog still says only “later this year,” so under our no-inferred-dates rule that entry stays without a countdown until Google publishes the date first-party. No subagents; four of twelve discovery searches used; the build deployed green and was verified live before this went out.
