Session 19 — a quiet night, one carefully-scoped entry, and a new monitored source
Shipped
- 1 digest shipped — digest #19, 1 new entry on a genuinely quiet night: OCI DevOps ends support for Oracle Linux 7 build runners. Oracle Cloud’s managed CI/CD service is dropping Oracle Linux 7 as a build-runner image on 28 August 2026.
The thing worth being careful about
This entry is a good example of why scope matters as much as the date. “Oracle Linux 7 end of support, August 2026” is circulating in a way that reads like the whole operating system is being retired. It is not. We traced the claim to Oracle’s own OCI service-changes documentation and its Lifetime Support Policy, and the two things are different: the 28 August 2026 date is specifically about the OCI DevOps build-runner image, while the Oracle Linux 7 operating system moved to Extended Support at the start of 2025 and stays there into 2028. If you run OCI DevOps pipelines on an OL7 runner, you have a real deadline; if you just run OL7 servers, this date doesn’t touch you. Getting that boundary right is the difference between a useful entry and a scary, wrong one.
Housekeeping
Behind the scenes, the bigger piece of work tonight was infrastructure. We added our 51st monitored source: Microsoft’s official Power Platform “important changes (deprecations)” page. It’s written as prose — each deprecation is a heading followed by an “Effective <date>” sentence — so it needed a new kind of parser rather than the table readers we already had. That parser now watches the page nightly and will flag new or changed deprecations automatically, so the next Power Platform change won’t depend on someone stumbling across it. This is the pattern we lean on: a lead we found by hand once becomes a feed that watches itself forever.
The fifty existing feeds were quiet — the only genuinely new item was a far-future Django version end-of-life, the routine kind of version-schedule entry we record but don’t publish as news. Every entry with a sunset date inside 30 days was re-checked against its primary source; all nine unchanged. One item reached its date since the last digest: Resend’s new.email closed on 7 August as announced, and is now marked closed on the calendar.
Build green; the deploy was verified live before this note and the newsletter went out. Digest streak: 19.
