Quick answers

Is it true that HCP Vagrant (Vagrant Cloud box registry) shuts down 31 December 2026 — export your boxes, Vagrant CLI stays?
Yes. HashiCorp has officially announced it, effective 31 Dec 2026. If any of your Vagrantfiles pull boxes from HCP Vagrant (the hosted box registry many teams know as Vagrant Cloud), that hosting is going away and your boxes will stop being served.
When does it take effect?
31 Dec 2026. Verified against the vendor's own announcement.
What should I use instead?
Inventory every Vagrantfile that references an HCP-hosted (Vagrant Cloud) box, then move those boxes to alternative hosting before 31 December 2026.

What this means for you

If any of your Vagrantfiles pull boxes from HCP Vagrant (the hosted box registry many teams know as Vagrant Cloud), that hosting is going away and your boxes will stop being served. The shutdown runs in three steps: as of 1 October 2026 you can no longer create new Vagrant boxes or registries; on 2 November 2026 HashiCorp ends support and maintenance for existing deployments; and on 31 December 2026 it decommissions all remaining Vagrant deployments, after which the hosted boxes are gone. Any `vagrant up` that resolves a box from an HCP-hosted registry will break once the service is decommissioned. This is a shutdown of the hosting service only — the open-source Vagrant CLI and its GitHub repository are unaffected and keep working; you just have to host your boxes somewhere else.

Where to go

Inventory every Vagrantfile that references an HCP-hosted (Vagrant Cloud) box, then move those boxes to alternative hosting before 31 December 2026. HashiCorp says it will provide migration guidance, including instructions for hosting boxes on Amazon S3; any replacement needs to serve the ".box files and catalog metadata" the Vagrant CLI expects. After the shutdown you can continue building boxes locally and distributing them through a self-managed repository — the CLI itself does not change.

  • Self-host boxes on Amazon S3 (HashiCorp's documented migration path) or any store serving .box files + catalog metadata
  • A self-managed box repository referenced directly from your Vagrantfile
  • The open-source Vagrant CLI and GitHub repository remain available and unaffected

HashiCorp is shutting down HCP Vagrant — the cloud-hosted Vagrant box registry and hosting service that many teams still know as Vagrant Cloud. Per HashiCorp’s official deprecation post, the service winds down over three dated steps and is fully decommissioned on 31 December 2026.

The deprecation “applies only to HCP Vagrant. The Vagrant CLI and source repository on GitHub will remain available.”

The three dates

  • 1 October 2026 — end of new creation. After this date, you cannot create new Vagrant boxes or registries.
  • 2 November 2026 — end of support and maintenance. HashiCorp ends support and maintenance for existing Vagrant deployments.
  • 31 December 2026 — end of operations. HashiCorp decommissions all remaining Vagrant deployments. After this, HCP-hosted boxes are no longer served.

Who this hits

Anyone whose Vagrantfile resolves a box from an HCP-hosted (Vagrant Cloud) registry. Once the service is decommissioned, vagrant up can no longer download those boxes. The open-source Vagrant tool itself is unaffected — you can keep building boxes locally and sharing them through a self-managed repository.

What to do

  1. Find every Vagrantfile that references an HCP-hosted box.
  2. Export those boxes to alternative hosting. HashiCorp says it will publish migration guidance, including how to host boxes on Amazon S3.
  3. Point your Vagrantfiles at the new location — any replacement must serve the .box files and catalog metadata the Vagrant CLI expects.

Do this before 31 December 2026, when the hosted boxes go away.

Entry changelog

  • — last reviewed.
  • — Entry created from HashiCorp's official deprecation blog post ("HCP Vagrant Deprecation: Important Dates and Migration Guidance"), surfaced via Layer-2 discovery (Hacker News) and read directly from the vendor post. Three dated milestones captured verbatim: 1 Oct 2026 (no new boxes/registries), 2 Nov 2026 (end of support and maintenance), 31 Dec 2026 (decommission all remaining deployments). sunsetDate set to 31 Dec 2026, the full-shutdown date this entry counts to. No detect: fingerprint — box references in a Vagrantfile are not a dependency name/image/text form the CLI reads, so no reliable repo-detectable artifact (Constitution §3.2).
